Care of Encaustic Paintings
With proper care, your encaustic painting will last for many years. The important thing to keep in mind is that no artwork should be hung in direct sunlight. The same is true for encaustic paintings. Since encaustic is made of beeswax and damar resin, it can be sensitive to high heat. Hang the painting in normal room temperatures. Encaustic will start to melt at 150 F.
When packing the painting for shipping, cover the front of the painting with wax paper, then bubble wrap and package so that the item will not move around during shipping.
Your encaustic painting will continue to cure during the first 6-12 months. Be careful not to make indents in the wax with fingernails or sharp objects. Over the first 6 months the painting may develop a white haze or "bloom". This is a normal part of curing for the artwork. You can buff this out using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and using a firm back and forth pressure. The painting will return to its original high shine.
